Countries are shaded by their share of world exports, or imports, of the chosen product in 2024. Lines are the country pairs carrying 90 percent of that trade, each sailed port to port along the shortest path on a published shipping lane network and summed where they share water. That makes them a derived picture of where the trade would sail, which differs from ship tracks. Neighbouring countries are assumed to trade overland and show as circles on their border, though some of that trade sails or flows by pipeline. Each country ships from one main port, so pipelines that bypass a chokepoint (Saudi Arabia to Yanbu and the UAE to Fujairah, both around Hormuz) are not modelled: chokepoint shares are upper bounds. BACI records almost none of Iran's sanctioned oil exports, so they are missing here. Data: CEPII BACI release 202601 (HS92), under the Etalab Open Licence 2.0; the primary list is Lall (2000) with ores and wood added. Sea routes are computed with searoute (Apache-2.0) on the Oak Ridge National Laboratory global shipping lane network (public domain), as enriched in Eurostat SeaRoute (EUPL-1.2).
