Mapping the meadow, so the community can act on it.

A working proof of concept for Posidonia stewardship in Pollica. We take what is already known about the seagrass, make its condition legible, and turn that into actions the port, the fishermen, and the schools can take this season.

Why Posidonia

Posidonia oceanica meadows are the foundation of a healthy Mediterranean coast. They shelter the fish the local fleet depends on, hold the sediment that keeps beaches in place, and store carbon in their root mats (matte) for thousands of years, far longer than a forest.1 A meadow that is protected and growing is, quite literally, a community asset that pays back in fisheries, clean water, and climate value.

The meadow is already here. The work is to see it clearly, agree what to protect, and give people something to do about it.

The hard part has never been the science. It is that the meadow is invisible from the surface, the data lives in agencies and logins, and "protection" rarely becomes a concrete action a fisherman or a student can take. This proof of concept closes that gap in three steps.

The approach: map, understand, act

Each step below is a live tool, not a mockup. Open them. They run on open public data today, and they are built to absorb the in-water data we collect this week.

03

One system behind it

The three tools above are faces of a single pipeline. It starts from a place, pulls in everything already known, fuses that with our own in-water sensing, and ends in decisions and routing. The same framework moves to any coast, Cilento today, another Mediterranean or Pacific shoreline next.

This week, on the water

A proof of concept earns trust by touching the real place. With the port and local fishermen, we go out over a Posidonia patch and bring back the first home-grown data, both the quantitative and the qualitative.

05

The path from here

Near term: engagement

Get the community, especially the schools, mapping and stewarding the meadow. Map to understand, understand to act: no-anchor zones, citizen-science surveys, a culture of protection. Community value first, measurable from day one.

Long term: verified value

The same maps and sensing build toward carbon-capture verification, the basis for a local economy that funds Posidonia protection. We are honest that verification is a road, not a switch, and this is the first stretch of it.

Whoever ultimately holds the sensors and the dashboards within Pollica holds a piece of the coast's stewardship. The aim of this proof of concept is to show that this can live here, with the people who already care about this sea.

The meadow, made legible. The next move, yours.

Open the tools, then let us put the week's data into them with you.
